If everyone is busy making everything, how can anyone perfect anything?
We start to confuse convenience with joy. Abundance with choice.
Designing something requires focus.
The first thing we ask is: What do we want people to feel?
Delight. Surprise. Love. Connection.
Then we begin to craft around our intention.
It takes time. There are a thousand no’s for every yes.
We simplify, we perfect, we start over, until everything we touch enhances each life it touches.
Only then do we sign our work: Designed by Apple in California.
Here’s to the crazy ones.
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them,
disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They invent. They imagine. They heal.
They explore. They create. They inspire.
They push the human race forward.
Maybe they have to be crazy.
How else can you stare at an empty canvas and see a work of art?
Or sit in silence and hear a song that’s never been written?
Or gaze at a red planet and see a laboratory on wheels?
We make tools for these kinds of people.
While some see them as the crazy ones,
we see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world, are the ones who do.
It was above the Apple Store’s genius bar that I first came across that quote. It instantly resonated with me, as I’m sure it has with the millions who have seen it. It resonated with me, as a designer, because of what it means to BE a designer. Jobs’ Apple was, and is, the living manifestation of this quote – showing the world that it’s alright to dream, and dream big, to take risks and stay true to your ideas no matter what the odds.
It is a sad day not because of Jobs’ resignation but because of the loss of what could have been; of all that would be possible. Jobs was compelled to create what he did; whether for a tiny share of the market or for the masses. He never stopped believing.
Insist. Persist. Never Settle. Scream and Yell, Fight for what you believe in. Dream. Do. Inspire. Zig. Carry on the legacy.
this last decade with Jobs:Apple’s Halcyon days, have had an unparalleled impact on design, culture, business, and technology. More than any other company in history showed us the Power of DESIGN. For those with the deepest connection to Apple Jobs is synonymous with the brand, an inexorable part of what we love. A superhero among menJobs for made us all dream bigger, and showed the world the power of truly great design. He will be missed; as much for what he has done as for what would have been possible had he not departed this world so soon.
Jobs was the hot fire that fueled the imagination and passion of everyone within Apple. Jobs’ Apple made us dream bigger and brighter than we ever thought we could! He was muse to the masses throughout his life…delighting and surprising us; Inspiring humankind. He Grew ‘the only 5% of the market worth having’ into a consumer base that made Apple a global icon and now all those whose lives he touched will forever feel a void where he once dwelled in our hearts.
